An incident

On Logan’s first day of school he jumped in the car after school and I asked him how his first day went. He answered, “Well, there was an incident in the lunch room.”  His exact words!! Now every day I ask him if there were any incidents! Apparently there was some confusion about his lunch box. He ended up buying a pizza and trying to eat his pb&j as a snack (too messy for the classroom.) The other incident was he had to throw is pizza away before he was finished eating. That was super upsetting too. I’ve clarified with him, eat your lunch in the lunchroom and your granola bar in the classroom. But his word choice of “incident” still tickles me.

Logan has been crying for three days because he has to wait until he’s 8 to get a pet. Luke just got his bearded dragon and Ethan got another parakeet. So Logan and I had a heart to heart on the couch. I put my arm around him and snuggled him in close. I told him there are lots of things I want but can’t have. He wanted examples. I told him I’m still happy even though I don’t have those things because things don’t make us happy. Then I asked him if he knows what does make us happy. He sniffled a yes... “What,” I asked?  He answered, “Love.” Awwwww!!! So we talked about everyone who loves him and everyone he loves. Out of the mouth of babes! Then I told him God makes us happy. He agreed and added that “Being nice” makes us happy too. Mind you, these answers didn’t come with bright, sunny smiles. No, they came through sniffles and morose tones, which made it all the more tender. Love that boy!

So last year...

Ethan told that jeans were “so last year.” We asked him “what’s so this year?” He replied, without missing a beat, without hesitation and with a great big grin, “Pajamas!” We all busted up laughing! The reason it was so hilarious is because he wears pajamas at every opportunity. We Covid, he never changed. It didn’t matter where we went inside or out, he on wearing pajamas. He brought pajamas with him and changed in the car if we went swimming. The few times we went to church, he wore his pajamas under his clothes. He is dedicated to his cause.
